All sounds come from vibrations.
Vibration is something that goes back and
forth, back and forth.
If something vibrates fast enough it will disturb
the air.
If the air vibrates, our ear drum picks up the
vibration.
An ear drum is a thin piece of skin inside your
ear, stretched tight like a drum.
It vibrates at the same rate as the original
vibration. You hear this as sound.

When you breathe hard through the straw,
the air vibrates.
This makes the little triangles you cut
vibrate very fast against each other.
The vibrations from your breath going
through the straw make the duck sound.

  • Try cutting the straw different lengths to see how the sound changes.
  • Which straw sounds most like a duck?
  • Fat straws or thin straws? Does the diameter of the straw affect the sound it makes?
