faberge_egg1.jpg
Fabergé eggs are jewelled eggs made
in Russia. The first egg was made by
royal jeweller, Carl Fabergé, as an Easter
gift for the wife of the Tsar of Russia.
Amid terrorist attempts on the
Imperial family's lives,Tsar Alexander III
wanted an Easter surprise
for the Tsarina, Maria Feodorovna.

The first egg, when opened, revealed
a gold hen, nestled in a golden yolk.
Within the hen was a tiny reproduction
of the Imperial Crown which was
fashioned from a diamond.
From the crown dangled a dazzling ruby.

There were 68 eggs created using gold,
other metals and precious stones -
such as diamonds, rubies and emeralds.
Each year, the gift was more extravagant
and detailed than the last.
They are priceless.
