A Smile for Elizabeth.....

For her beautiful, colourful art which shows the Colour-Wheel in action

Why does the blue splash behind the hill seem so very bright, I wonder...?

Playing with Colour

Artists in the Library... Victor Vasarely, Wassily Kandinsky... and Mrs Nyhof

vasarely.jpg
Victor Vasarelylived in Hungary. He loved
playing with colours. He discovered that when
you put some colours next to each other
they seem to jump out at you -
they look almost 3D!

Wassily Kandinskylived in Russia. He loved
playing with colours too - but his brain was rather
special... when he saw colours he heard music and
when he heard music he saw colours! If you had a
brain like Kandinsky's I wonder what music your
colourful classroom would play...... you could even
paint your singing!

Kandinsky's Paint-box Orchestra

Every colour reminded Kandinsky of a musical
instrument -
redmade him think of strong sounds,
like trumpets. When he saw
yellowhe thought of
lively instruments like piccolos.
Bluewas quiet
and serious like a double base ...
Have a look at his Paint-box Orchestra on the
easel in the Allen Centre

Put it on the white card and stare hard at it while
you count to 20..... take the colour away....
look at the white space... in a few seconds a
ghostly shadow appears.....Surprise! It's
GREEN!
Now try the
GREENcolour...

Brooke and Georgia put a small
orangesquare
in the middle of different coloured big squares.
As if by magic, the brightness of the
orangesquares was different on each big square -
the brightest of all on the
bluesquare.....
Yes! The brightest colour combinations are opposite
each other on Carmine's Colour-Wheel.
