Guernica, Pablo Picasso: A single, terrible, scream.....

guernica.jpg

Pablo Picasso was born in Spain. 70 years ago their was a cruel and terrible war.

The little, peaceful town of Guernica was completely destroyed by bombs.

Everyone in the town was killed or badly hurt. The town burned for 3 whole days!

An angry Picasso painted this powerful picture of people and horses dying in Guernica.

The painting, all in black and white and grey looks like a single, terrible scream.

It's a HUGE painting - as big as one whole wall in the Allen Centre!

He wanted to show people the horror of war and make them think hard about it.

Perhaps it would make people stop fighting.... What do you think?

Can you see...

  • A frightened woman carrying a flame-lit lantern

  • A woman holding a dead child

  • A man lying dead holding a broken spear

  • A horse, screaming with pain and fear

  • Flames burning in the town
